2022 Kitchen Renovation

Ready for Inspection

May 19, 2022

With the inspection scheduled for tomorrow, today is the last day to complete the rebar and framing work for pouring the concrete. I reported earlier that Pedro is currently focusing on another project, so since then Armin has been working alone. Today, however, he brought in a new person to assist him. I forgot his name, but he’s a friend of Armin’s. Not really a worker actually, but that’s fine. He seemed to work well with Armin and the work got done, so we’re happy. With that being said, they did stick around until like 9pm! At one point I told Armin, listen if the inspector is not coming until later in the day, maybe just leave and come back to finish in the morning, but he was like, ‘no no, we’re going to get this done and ready for inspection today, for sure.” He seemed really adamant, which I respect. I don’t know if he expected to be here until 9pm when he said that, but to his credit the work got done and we’re ready for inspection.

Some key things that happened today:

When is Inspection?

When I asked Armin what time the inspection is set for, he said it’s not. He will need to call in the morning to find out. I asked if that meant he hasn’t scheduled it in yet, and was waiting ‘til the day-of to do so, but he said no, he already called to schedule it, but the way it works is that he has to call again the day-of to, I guess, check-in and then they tell him a specific window of time that the inspector will come?

Rebar Progress

I don’t really have any specifics to note. I was too busy today to check in regularly, but by like 6:30-7, I went back to check and saw that all the rebar has been installed. Armin also went ahead and tied the inner and outer grids together, at the top, slightly, so that they don’t rest against the boards, and when the cement is poured they’ll rest more on the inside of the blocks. Hopefully i’m explaining that clearly enough. Basically, before, they were just resting inside the boarded up trenches, so that they were leaning against the boards. I mentioned to Armin that I was worried that when they pour the cement and it dries, the rebar would be resting on the outer parts of the cement blocks. He said that’s not a huge worry, but he’ll go ahead and tie them at the top to pull them in, away from the boards. Capiche?

Boards Are Up, But Are They Aligned?

As Armin promised, by the time they called it a day, the entire boarded up structure was done! So we’re ready for inspection. At the moment, my main worry regarding the work, is the alignment of the boards. I haven’t broken my ruler out yet, but by eye it doesn’t look quite straight on the south side. I already mentioned to Armin that I’m a little concerned about that, and plan to double check at the end, and he seemed totally cool with that. I plan to do that after inspection. Maybe they’ll catch that for me. We’ll see.
